A pinnacle of the film noir era, The Big Sleep from 1946 is the famed adaptation of Raymond Chandler's hardboiled crime novel featuring Humphrey Bogart as private detective Philip Marlowe. It helped set the blueprint for gumshoes getting sucked into labyrinthine conspiracies and facing foes they have no true chance of beating. At the time too, America had "Bogie and Bacall" (as in co-star Lauren Bacall) fever, as the two had just gotten married the year before. Though gratuitous bloodshed should never be the sole benchmark for a successful genre film, The Apology doesn’t offer much else in terms of incentivizing audience investment. Gunn and Roache liven up the script as best as they can, but there’s not enough narrative for them to work with. Locke could have easily created a 20-minute short that keeps the tension ratcheting up, rather than falling into extended lulls.

It also adheres quite a bit to both the story beats and style of the 1962 film, led by Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck (both of whom make role-reversed cameos in Scorsese's remake). There is some incisive social commentary in this story, as well as some of the most infuriating instances of dark comedy in recent memory, but the movie still relies heavily on creating a nightmare situation. What the movie builds to by its second half is very much in the tradition of the relationship between home invasion movies and the horror genre. Naturalistic, unappealing, and pitiable performances dominate a movie that often feels like a documentary. This was certainly Craven’s intention with this loose remake of Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring.

Jordan Peele's Oscar-winning horror recently made it onto Sight and Sound's list of the 100 Greatest Movies Ever Made – and with very good reason. Tim Burton's 1990 gothic classic about a synthetic man with scissor hands remains one of his very finest creations – and includes one of Johnny Depp's very finest performances. It follows events after the title character is taken in by Peg, a kindly Avon lady, only for things to take a turn for the worse when he is blamed for a crime he did not commit. Equal parts thriller and romance, this is a wonderfully gripping and immensely quotable film that is thoroughly deserving of its fine reputation.

A married man's one-night stand comes back to haunt him when that lover begins to stalk him and his family. A convicted rapist, released from prison after serving a fourteen-year sentence, stalks the family of the lawyer who originally defended him. It's bad enough to imagine someone breaking into your home, it's even worse to imagine someone breaking in when you are lacking some of your vital senses. Kate Siegel, star of The Haunting of Hill House, leads this terrifying thriller as Maddie Young, a deaf and mute woman. Unable to hear or speak, Maddie is forced to fight for her life by any means necessary when a man breaks into her home wearing a mask.

However, the brilliance of Kubrick’s film is that, despite scenes such as these, by the end of the film Alex becomes a sympathetic figure. For some of us, home invasion films are the scariest horror movies out there. Unlike the supernatural, paranormal, and even slasher movies, home invasions are the most realistic scenario out there. Some horror movies work hard to make the setting as true-to-life as possible to make it as freaky as possible. A shot-for-shot remake of the director’s just-as-grim 1997 psychological horror film, Funny Games is a descent into something darker than most of us are used to. We don’t get to breathe during this nightmare in terms of pacing, but at no point does the movie suddenly roar into a tense cat-and-mouse in a more traditional tradition.

Without wanting to give away any spoilers or explain the entire plot, what follows is a well-directed, atmospheric game of cat and mouse.
